My name is Mary Johnson. I am 25 years old. I lost my left leg above the knee, half of my right hand, and suffered a traumatic brain injury after being hit by a freight train when I was 23 years old. I was in a coma for over a month afterwards. When I woke up, I was overwhelmed with sadness by the idea that I wouldn’t be able to run again with my middle school students. Prior to my injury, I coached a running club at a middle school where I also taught seventh grade English. However, with the help of Amputee Blade Runners this sad thought is NOT a reality. I am able to run once again and will be back to coaching middle school athletes soon.

After my injury, I have spent a year and a half walking on a C leg prosthesis. With the C leg, I would comfortably take my dog for long walks. I also was able to row on a rowing machine in a gym with my walking C leg. However, rowing and walking was not enough for me! In September of 2017, Amputee Blade Runners has generously provided me with a running blade so that I can learn to run again. There is no reason why losing a leg should stop anyone from fulfilling their heart’s desire to run, if running is something that you want to do! Insurance may tell you , “No,” but Amputee Blade Runners and your heart will tell you, “Yes!” Now that I’m running, I am healthier and happier. I am also meeting others with disabilities through Amputee Blade Runners and through the Achilles International group. Listen to your heart and your body, and not to others who may tell you, “No.”
